Particle displacements in the elastic deformation of amorphous materials: local fluctuations vs. non-affine field
We study the local disorder in the deformation of amorphous materials by
decomposing the particle displacements into a continuous, inhomogeneous field
and the corresponding fluctuations. We compare these fields to the commonly
used non-affine displacements in an elastically deformed 2D Lennard-Jones
glass. Unlike the non-affine field, the fluctuations are very localized, and
exhibit a much smaller (and system size independent) correlation length, on the
order of a particle diameter, supporting the applicability of the notion of
local "defects" to such materials. We propose a scalar "noise" field to
characterize the fluctuations, as an additional field for extended continuum
models, e.g., to describe the localized irreversible events observed during

Why latrines are not used : communities' perceptions and practices regarding latrines in a Taenia solium endemic rural area in Eastern Zambia
Taenia solium cysticercosis is a neglected parasitic zoonosis occurring in many developing countries. Socio-cultural determinants related to its control remain unclear. Studies in Africa have shown that the underuse of sanitary facilities and the widespread occurrence of free-roaming pigs are the major risk factors for porcine cysticercosis. The study objective was to assess the communities' perceptions, practices and knowledge regarding latrines in a T. solium endemic rural area in Eastern Zambia inhabited by the Nsenga ethno-linguistic group, and to identify possible barriers to their construction and use. A total of 21 focus group discussions on latrine use were organized separately with men, women and children, in seven villages of the Petauke district. The themes covered were related to perceived latrine availability (absence-presence, building obstacles) and perceived latrine use (defecation practices, latrine management, socio-cultural constraints). The findings reveal that latrines were not constructed in every household because of the convenient use of existing latrines in the neighborhood. Latrines were perceived to contribute to good hygiene mainly because they prevent pigs from eating human feces. Men expressed reluctance to abandon the open-air defecation practice mainly because of toilet-associated taboos with in-laws and grown-up children of the opposite gender. When reviewing conceptual frameworks of people's approach to sanitation, we found that seeking privacy and taboos hindering latrine use and construction were mainly explained in our study area by the fact that the Nsenga observe a traditionally matrilineal descent. These findings indicate that in this local context latrine promotion messages should not only focus on health benefits in general. Since only men were responsible for building latrines and mostly men preferred open defecation, sanitation programs should also be directed to men and address related sanitary taboos in order to be effective
Thermal quark production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions
We calculate thermal production of u, d, s, c and b quarks in
ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The following processes are taken into
account: thermal gluon decay (g to ibar i), gluon fusion (g g to ibar i), and
quark-antiquark annihilation (jbar j to ibar i), where i and j represent quark
species. We use the thermal quark masses, ,
in all the rates. At small mass (), the production is largely
dominated by the thermal gluon decay channel. We obtain numerical and analytic
solutions of one-dimensional hydrodynamic expansion of an initially pure glue
plasma. Our results show that even in a quite optimistic scenario, all quarks
are far from chemical equilibrium throughout the expansion. Thermal production
of light quarks (u, d and s) is nearly independent of species. Heavy quark (c
and b) production is quite independent of the transition temperature and could
serve as a very good probe of the initial temperature. Thermal quark production
measurements could also be used to determine the gluon damping rate, or

Continuum limit of amorphous elastic bodies: A finite-size study of low frequency harmonic vibrations
The approach of the elastic continuum limit in small amorphous bodies formed
by weakly polydisperse Lennard-Jones beads is investigated in a systematic
finite-size study. We show that classical continuum elasticity breaks down when
the wavelength of the sollicitation is smaller than a characteristic length of
approximately 30 molecular sizes. Due to this surprisingly large effect
ensembles containing up to N=40,000 particles have been required in two
dimensions to yield a convincing match with the classical continuum predictions
for the eigenfrequency spectrum of disk-shaped aggregates and periodic bulk
systems. The existence of an effective length scale \xi is confirmed by the
analysis of the (non-gaussian) noisy part of the low frequency vibrational
eigenmodes. Moreover, we relate it to the {\em non-affine} part of the
displacement fields under imposed elongation and shear. Similar correlations
(vortices) are indeed observed on distances up to \xi~30 particle sizes.Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 3 table
DNA repair biomarkers XPF and phospho-MAPKAP kinase 2 correlate with clinical outcome in advanced head and neck cancer.
BackgroundInduction chemotherapy is a common therapeutic option for patients with locoregionally-advanced head and neck cancer (HNC), but it remains unclear which patients will benefit. In this study, we searched for biomarkers predicting the response of patients with locoregionally-advanced HNC to induction chemotherapy by evaluating the expression pattern of DNA repair proteins.MethodsExpression of a panel of DNA-repair proteins in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded specimens from a cohort of 37 HNC patients undergoing platinum-based induction chemotherapy prior to definitive chemoradiation were analyzed using quantitative immunohistochemistry.ResultsWe found that XPF (an ERCC1 binding partner) and phospho-MAPKAP Kinase 2 (pMK2) are novel biomarkers for HNSCC patients undergoing platinum-based induction chemotherapy. Low XPF expression in HNSCC patients is associated with better response to induction chemoradiotherapy, while high XPF expression correlates with a worse response (p = 0.02). Furthermore, low pMK2 expression was found to correlate significantly with overall survival after induction plus chemoradiation therapy (p = 0.01), suggesting that pMK2 may relate to chemoradiation therapy.ConclusionsWe identified XPF and pMK2 as novel DNA-repair biomarkers for locoregionally-advanced HNC patients undergoing platinum-based induction chemotherapy prior to definitive chemoradiation. Our study provides insights for the use of DNA repair biomarkers in personalized diagnostics strategies. Further validation in a larger cohort is indicated
